Israel 60 years!

State of Israel again on the map since 60 years
Sixty years ago history was written when the State of Israel was established, on May 14 of 1948, 5 Iyar 5708. Immediate occasion was the termination of the British Mandate that very same evening. The Second World War made visible how necessary this has been. In spite of attempts to stop the Jewish people and even to destroy ships with Jewish fugitives and to kill them Israel succeeded in establishing the State officially in 1948.
Bitter necessity
The Second World War has rendered opportunity to the enemies of the G-d of Israel to kill as many Jews as possible. They did that with great zeal. Also this period gave opportunity to the other nations to stop the killing. The enemies did not succeed in making Israel disappear, although they promised each other to do it. And the other nations did not succeed to stop the atrocities. A clear necessary condition for the establishment of the Jewish State: together strong against enemies which still exist today.
Herzl
In 1897 the very passionate jurist and journalist Theodore Herzl called together the First Zionist Congress. One of the important results of this congress has been that Israel as people had the right to “national rebirth in its own country”, as it would be called later in the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. This right was acknowledged in the Balfour Declaration which has been published as letter on November 2 of 1917 and confirmed in the “Mandate for Palestine” on July 24 of 1922 by the League of Nations. In it the international ratification was given for a historical connection between the Jewish people and the land of Israel and for the right of the people of Israel to rebuild her National Home.
Promise and deception
In the following years the British took a lot of pains to deny that the establishment of a Jewish state was what they meant. In private British authorities among whom Balfour admitted that the interpretation of the Jews would lead to the ultimate result. They tried to clarify through the text that the words “National Home” did not mean all of what was called “Palestine” at the time. And a little later, already in 1923, the British took 91,000 square kilometer of the promised area away and made it into what later would be called Jordan. The remaining 20,000 square kilometers would be trimmed back even more later on.
Back in own land
On November 29 of 1947 the General Council of the United Nations passed a resolution which called for the establishment of a Jewish State in Eretz Israel, the Israeli territory. The UN demanded from the inhabitants of this state to take the steps necessary to execute this resolution. This acknowledgement by the United Nations concerning the right of the Jewish people to establish the State of Israel is irrevocable. In the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel it says: “This right is the natural right of the Jewish people to be masters of their own fate, like all other nations, in their own sovereign State.” Israel, congratulated with your 60th birthday!”This article written by: Lion Erwteman
