Cleaning our Hanukiah

Cleaning our Hanukiah

I live with my husband Ab and four children in Holland. Our children are in the ages ranging from 11-17. We all know how busy we as women can be with the preparations for an anniversary, like me the last time for my husband. I want to have everything neat and clean. Armed with bucket and cloth I flew through my house. Do you know those skilful, colorful micro fiber clothes? I use one for dusting, one for the bathroom, one for the bathrooms, one for shimmer the windows. And they all have a matching color. ??The birthday party of my husband fell on the last day of Chanukah. The chanukiot, candle stick holders for Chanukah were covered with candle grease, also those of our children. The grease had also dripped on the floor. I removed the large pieces of the chanukiot. Then I placed the chanukiot on a piece of grease-proof paper in the oven (100 °C or 210 degrees Fahrenheit), with the result that all of the candle-grease had melted. After approximately a half hour I finished polishing the chanukiot with an old cloth. I used to remove the candle-grease under the hot tap – it works also well – but I no longer do it, because the drain should be clogged.

You can also put the chanukiot in the freezer. After a couple hours, the candle-grease falls off. However if your freezer is always full this is not a good idea. I took away the scrap pieces from the parquet floor. Afterwards I scraped the floor with an old credit card. For the last leftovers, I put a piece of kitchen roll on the spots and with the hot flat-iron became everything spick-and-span. Moreover, this way I had removed the candle-grease of the pullover of my son with the flat-iron which temperature I had adapted to the pullover. The rest of the spots I had cleaned with benzine on a plug of cotton.
